The announcement of the government shutdown with no intended date of re-opening has millions across the nation concerned about their basic needs being met. Thousands of government employees have been furloughed, and millions of citizens are worried about meeting their families' basic needs, as SNAP benefits are allegedly set to halt this November. The current presidential administration is doing a stellar job of creating the most tumultuous economy and job market our nation has seen, and it is predicted to get worse throughout the remaining course of the presidential term. The severity of the state our country is in is filled with racial and classist divides, selfishness, greed, and little to no regard for the American people. A first-world country and one of the ten wealthiest nations in the world is willing to allow approximatley 40 million constituents to go hungry this November, and nearing the holiday season.
With uncertainty lingering in the air for many, the reliance on community resources and initiatives will be the saving grace for a President and political party that just simply doesn't seem to give any fucks. Here are some national and local resources that may assist families in need. Feeding America (https://www.feedingamerica.org/find-your-local-foodbank) is a national database of food banks across the country. Click the link, type in your zip code, and the nearest food bank(s) will appear. Food Pantries of America (https://foodfinder.us/) has a food finder that connects those in need with the closest locations for food and toiletries resources. This is the time for all of our churches, non-profits, Greek organizations, and the affluent to step up and assist.
Perhaps you have something to spare — whether it is a monetary donation, food items, or time — whatever it is, we must all get involved and use our resources. Also, remember to be kind and empathetic; we may not know what others are facing. Lastly, be sure to get out and vote. California is holding a special election on Proposition 50 to save democracy. The time for standing by idly as things continue to worsen is not in the collective's best interest. Whichever method you prefer, we must each take a step towards ending this nightmare, or else we'll be awakened with tears in our eyes.
