Summer Walker released the final piece to her album trilogy, 'So Over It,' this past Friday. I must also shout out her PR run, which was ultra original and creative. My favorite song on the album is 'Go Girl'; both features of the song complement the message and melody. Another one I enjoyed is 'No', which sampled Beyonce's 'Yes', emphasizing the expectations women are held to when in a romantic partnership.
The album is a press play and a fine conclusion.
Wale, let us know that 'Everything is A lot' is on Friday. I want to echo the sentiments of several music commentators, specifically those in the hip-hop, who have mentioned that Wale is involved in some of the best R&B and hip-hop collaborations. My album favorites are 'Fly Away', which samples Maxwell's 'Pretty Wings', and 'Watching Us', sampling Goapele's 'Closer', an all-time favorite of mine. I also had 'Michael Fredo' on replay and could hear the influence Wale had on Rick Ross' luxury rap cadence, because Ross could easily slide on the song and turn things up a notch. My least favorite was 'Blanco', it is a bit whiny to me. However, I appreciate the vulnerability expressed. Wale's 'Everything is A lot' is loaded with multiple hip hop and R&B mashups and is a nicely done project.
Check out Summer and Wale's full album, available on all streaming services, as they dominated the weekend's music drops. Also check out Lola Brooke's new EP 'iight bet!' Her latest single 'Pain' samples Mary J Blige's 'No More Drama'. Her visuals for the single are serving saddity and cutesy, fun size, but she ain't to be played with.
New Albums & EPs
Summer Walker: Finally Over it
Wale: Everything is A lot
Lola Brooke: iight bet!
Gloss Up dropped a fresh single, 'Glossy', sampling Kelis' 'Bossy', and I like it a lot. Imbossysshell was my aim back in the day, and I played 'Bossy' as my Myspace profile song for the longest. Needless to say, I am feeling what Gloss did with the sample. AZ Chike 'Hit A Nerve' with his latest and gave us another West Coast banger. Elsie is a newbie to me, hailing from Mississippi, letting us know she likes the 'Ghetto Cowboys' and dropped what I describe as a Country Hip Hop single to tell us why. Check out the singles from all the artists mentioned. As always, these lists are not a ranking.
Happy Listening!!!
